Why a Catholic Education Matters
As I continue to grow in my own faith, I find it very powerful to hear 1st graders understand and experience how their prayers impact them and others. It is also amazing to hear them pray for others around the world and to show compassion for others who are suffering on a personal and global level.

I had been looking for a full-time teaching position when my father told me about the ad at St. Joseph School. He  graduated from St. Joseph School and was a life long member of St. Joseph Church. I applied the next day, was interviewed and offered the position. That December my Dad died, but his love and lessons about Jesus Christ continue to guide me on this journey. I appreciate and treasure my job as I know how important God's mission is to our world. I've had many experiences through my family and the children at St. Joseph School which confirm in my mind and spirit that this is where God wants me to continue this mission.

First Grade News
Teacher: Mrs. Mary Case
Aide: Mrs. Lorie Fix

We have welcomed many new families to our first grade.  We have already made many new friends and are working well together.  This year we are blessed to have Mrs. Lorrie Fix as our classroom aide, Miss Melanie Loranty as our 1:1 aide, Mrs. Lucille DiSanto as our Special Education teacher, Mrs. Barbara Glenn as our Academic Intervention Services teacher, and Miss Kristen Roemer a student observer from S.U.N.Y. Brockport on our first grade team.

The children are working hard to complete their morning routine independently.  We start each day with a special message from our principal, prayers, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a new fitness program called Plus 5 Fitness.

I will begin our year teaching the children about the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and how to use them at school and at home.  These spiritual gifts include:  love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, and self-control.  We will learn several prayers and what they mean during the next few months.  We will be spending time learning about Creation, Mass, the Holy Family and the Saints.

I have established reading skill teams.  These teams will be developing and applying:  rhyming skills, blending and decoding skills, comprehension skills, vowel patterns, sequencing stories, re-telling stories with details and repetitive text, building fluency, and memorizing sight words.

During our daily math meetings we are learning and applying the following skills:  how to interpret and complete a calendar, the days of the week, months of the year, counting by ones, fives, and tens forwards and backwards, and place values (ones & tens).   We will be applying additional skills that include:  graphing, sets, extending a counting sequence, writing numbers with correct form, identifying geometric shapes (angles, sides, and faces), left and right, comparing numbers (least and most), fractions (whole & half), addition and subtraction, problem solving, ordinal numbers, and money (pennies).

We will be exploring mini units in Social Studies that include:  friendship, families, climates, rules, voting, and problem solving strategies.

During science lessons we will be exploring various habitats, the desert, sunflowers (plant life cycle) and monarch butterflies (life cycle).

Language Arts lessons will include the application of grammar, voice, punctuation, and capitalization.  In addition to organizing their ideas using lined paper.  They will have several opportunities to share their writing and illustrations with their peers.  I look forward to using our new iPads to help the children create stories and develop oral language skills.
