First Grade News

First Grade has been off to a great start! We have been busy bees growing and learning.

In reading, we have been working on decoding skills and building fluency.  We have also focused our time on story elements. As we move through this next trimester, I would like to focus on comprehension skills as well.  Students practice spelling words and sight words daily.

We have been practicing our use of nouns and adjectives with our writing.  First Grade friends are also mastering sentence structure.  I am so proud of them!  We will continue growing with writing letters, making lists, and personal narratives.

Our Social Studies Unit is on Communities.  Students will be able to map their community, define community, and know who is involved in their school community.

In Science, students will finish up the light and sound unit and move on to sky patterns.  In this unit of study, students take on various missions as they investigate different sky patterns. These missions include tracking the Sun to predict where it will be at different times of the day and checking out sunsets to discover the seasonal pattern to the amount of daylight throughout the year. Students consider the cycle of night and day and figure out the patterns to the phases of the moon.

In Math, Students will be introduced to place value through addition and subtraction within 20. Also, we are working towards automaticity with math facts to 20.

I know First Grade will continue to soar!
