It’s hard to believe, but another successful marking period
has flown by! Once again, the 6th, 7th, and 8th
grade Social Studies classes have done some excellent work – with more to come
in marking periods 3 and 4.
In 6th grade, we’re getting into our unit on Ancient Greece. We began by looking at the early Greek civilizations of the Minoans and Mycenaeans, and are finishing our study of how the city-states of Athens and Sparta came to be. Next, we will be moving on to the Persian Wars – a topic that the 6th graders seem very excited about! In 7th grade, we just took our unit test on European Exploration and Colonization of the Americas. The results were very pleasing! Many of our 7th graders demonstrated superb abilities in terms of writing and reading comprehension. We are now moving into our study of the Revolutionary Era. We will study how the spirit of independence grew in the American colonies, and the amazing way in which we were able to win our independence during the Revolutionary War. Lots of fun activities to come! Our 8th graders have just finished studying the rise of industry and big business in the United States (late 1800’s-early 1900’s). They are completing a very interesting journal project in which they take the role of a child laborer in the United States (factory worker, mill worker, newspaper boy, etc). It has been enjoyable to see how our 8th graders can demonstrate their knowledge of a historical period in an alternative and creative way! As this project wraps up, we will transition to immigration and the rise of cities. The students will be given a Family Ancestry Project to develop an appreciation and understanding of our country’s rich immigrant tradition. We’re looking forward to Catholic Schools week next week – everyone is very excited for all of the fun, community building activities that are in store! |
