First Grade NewsWe have been busy accomplishing our goals in First Grade! It is astounding and enjoyable to witness the growth of each child from the beginning of the school year until now.
Students are still exploring reading with UFLI and Superkids. They will read words with short and long vowel sounds. They will also be reading longer words and focus on spelling patterns in word endings and vowel teams. Our Superkids help with discussing dialogue, understanding characters, identifying main idea and key details. Story Elements continue to be an important part of Reading. In ELA, informational and opinion writing remain the focus. Students are still mastering nouns, adjectives and verbs. Our Science Unit focuses on sending messages with light and sound. In this unit, students behave as scientists as they plan and carry out investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials make sound. Students realize the cause and effect relationship between light and our ability to see. Through a series of activities, students conduct investigations, make observations, and communicate information on how light interacts with different materials. Students look for patterns in their data focusing on how we use sound and light to communicate non verbally. The unit culminates in an engineering project in which students work collaboratively to design and build a device that solves the problem of communicating over a distance. In Math, we will work on ordering and comparing length measurements as numbers. The standards for this unit have students representing and solving problems involving addition and subtraction. They will measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. This will require students to order three objects by length and express the length of an object as a whole number of length units. Social Studies will compare and contrast families of today vs. long ago. Students will explore how families are similar and different, families change and grow over time, and members of a family have rules and responsibilities to help one another. |
