First Grade NewsWelcome to First Grade! We will be busy this Fall learning our new procedures, routines and establishing classroom rules. We will create and foster relationships and friendships. We will grow academically, socially, and emotionally!
The Superkids continue to help us on our reading adventures. Students will begin with review from End of the Year in Kindergarten. We will review letters by sound and sight. Handwriting practice will be implemented daily. Students will focus on decoding and encoding short-vowel words. They will use the Superkids readers to practice comprehension skills. We will discuss complete sentences and nouns. We will begin Math with reviewing ten frames and number bonds. Students will work towards fluency with addition and subtraction of numbers to ten. They will decompose and compose addends and total amounts. In Religion, Unit 1 introduces Jesus, whose words and actions porcelain his Father's saving love. Students learn the Sign of the Cross as an expression of our friendship with Jesus. They will learn about the goodness of creation and their responsibility to care for it. They will also learn how God shares his life with us at Baptism and what it means to belong to the family of the Church. We will focus on Sky Patterns in Science. The main topics covered in this unit include investigating to find the sun in the sky before it sets. They then apply their learning to determine where to look for the moonrise and moonset and what happens after the sun sets. Social studies includes focusing on citizenship and what it means to be a member of a community or group. They learn they are citizens of their local communities. |
